Hatfield College Boat Club
Founded in 1846, Hatfield College Boat Club has a long tradition but remains a vibrant club with a reputation that is equal parts friendly and competitive. Welcoming rowers of all abilities, HCBC prides itself on its inclusive approach to rowing, boasting strong Senior Men's and Women’s squads, as well as one of the best Novice Development programmes on the college rowing scene, for rowers and coxes alike. Many of our novices progress into the top boats of the Senior Squads and some have also gone on to become Presidents of the club. Located behind the college on the banks of the River Wear, our boathouse is well equipped with an erg room and an excellent fleet of boats, including eights and fours.
HCBC has a strong track record of success at longer winter head races and summer regattas, both locally and further afield. Our crews regularly dominate other colleges and university crews from across the UK at major races, which in recent years have included the Head of the River Races and Henley Women’s Regatta. For many in the club, Durham Regatta is a particular highlight in a packed racing calendar, offering high-level racing on our home stretch of water.
The club also has a thriving social scene that goes beyond frequent themed socials. Members of the White Lion Club, our very own alumni network, regularly cheer us on at competitions and even join us for our annual Christmas Dinner or President’s Drinks in the summer. The annual HCBC barbeque and a hearty pasta meal the night before a race, fondly nicknamed “pasta bonding”, are other beloved traditions of the club.
HCBC welcomes rowers and coxes of all abilities and also extends a warm hand to those who wish to be social members of the club.
