The JCR Levy

At the start of your time at Hatfield, you have the option to join the JCR by paying a one-off levy.

This levy covers the entirety of your time at Hatfield and opens the door to a world of opportunity during your time in Durham.

It really is a must-have to get the best experience and to make the most of college life. For most people, you’ll easily make your money back and more by the end of your degree!

Have a look at our website and our social media to get a glimpse at what amazing things being a JCR member will have in store.

If you have any questions, please email the treasurer, Henry, at hatfield.jcrtreasurer@durham.ac.uk.

Where the JCR gets its money

Where Your Levy Goes

What do these things mean?

The above charts show a rough outline of the typical distribution of the income sources of the JCR and the typical distribution of how the JCR Levy is spent every year.

  • Composition Fee - This is a small sum of money paid to every JCR by the university, this is proportional to how many undergraduate students we have in the college.

  • Hires - Through a range of methods, especially all of our tech (things like speakers and microphones), we regularly hire out equipment to organisations across Durham. A lot of this money goes into improving things like our tech, meaning we can make events even cheaper while still achieving a high standard.

  • Event and Formal Subsidy - The events the JCR holds are not to be missed! And shouldn’t be missed because they’re too expensive, the JCR works hard to subsidise our events, like our balls, to make them as accessible as possible (do contact the treasurer. if you ever want to discuss options for more help with accessing these events). Hatfield are known across the university for our formals, apart from during the exam period, we have them every week! The JCR works hard to make these accessible as possible by also subsiding these.

  • Exec Projects - The JCR executive committee is made up of a diverse range of elected volunteers, each individual exec member has some impressive projects on the go that relate to their specific area. This part of the budget allows them to do just that. Find out more about the exec here.

  • Outreach - This includes money that goes towards trying to help people get involved with the JCR, including awards and incentives.

  • Salary - The JCR and the Exec are led by the “Senior Man”. This is another elected position however, this one is sabbatical, meaning they have either graduated or are taking a year out from their studies and are paid a salary.

  • Sports and Societies - We support sports and societies in a range of ways, such as grants, always ensuring that they’re able to do what they’re amazing at.
