For the past few weeks, Hatfield Feminist Commitee have been meeting to discuss all things feminism. Our aim is simple - to discuss and educate to all those who want to enrich themselves on Feminism, a political, ideological and social movement with a goal to define, establish and achieve economic, political, personal and social equality of sexes. It also includes seeking equal educational and professional opportunities.
This is no preaching hour for us. Having this community in Hatfield allows us to interact and engage with issues which mean the most to us, whilst gaining strong connections in all year groups.
Every two weeks, we have a book club, allowing for us to discuss feminist themes in popular literature (and also cinema). So far, we have discussed Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, which allowed for a lively and passionate debate about the theme of clothes and femininity.
Other issues that we have also touched upon have been feminism within the job sector. Are outreach opportunities worthwhile? Is positive discrimination a good thing? It is these kinds of questions that enable us to develop our own ideas in a safe and non judgmental environment.
With Hatfield’s recent unveiling of the Lioness sculpture, equal rights has never been so prevalent within Hatfield. I can safely say that I feel accepted and at home within this loving community. By talking and taking action, equal rights will no longer be a myth, but rather a reality for girls everywhere.
As an intersectional feminist committee - we look at all scopes of feminism. No voice is turned away and no belief is discarded.
If you want to get involved, eat snacks and see what we do, please join us at 5-6pm every Thursday in the Hatfield JCR Room. The more the merrier!
